i like music a lot
sry for the wall of text
ive always listened to music, but my mind didnt awaken until i found rock music. In middle school and freshman year i just listened to chill indie pop. but in 2020 youtube recommended me "Honey I'm Home" by destroy boys and i ascended. my entire life changed when i discovered rock. im not even joking like i became an entirely new person. deadass.
im still kinda insecure when i talk about the music i like tho. i know its not typical for a person like me, but i love it so much. to me, music is a reflection of the self. its a raw expression of my anger with the world and love for people. so if someone judges my taste in music, they are judging me! (ik thats not true but its how my brain works)
my music has allowed me to explore and express angry/dark emotions in a way i never have. ive always been a people pleaser and i bottle up my anger, so this is like, my only outlet. that was a really roundabout way to say i like my music a lot!
my main music taste is punk, but more specifically riot grrrl. riot grrrl is a genre defined by women's empowerment. to my knowledge, the first popularizing of this term was in 90s zines. Women in the punk scene were tired of the mistreatment and exlusion from men, so they started writing about feminism and their experiences in zines. They also began to form girl bands, and by screaming and squealing into their microphones they made the best fucking music ever created. the most prominent of these bands include Bratmobile, Bikini Kill, Sleater-Kinney, etc. read more abt riot grrrl here
when it comes to modern riot grrrl, there has been a slight revival. (ive heard ppl argue abt whether punk is dead lol idk). within the newer movement we strive to empower more than just white women. Ironically, ive heard of discrimination within the first riot grrl movement when it came to race. riot grrrl in today's age has (hopefully) become a welcoming place for people of all genders, sexualities, and POC to vent their frustration with the world.
i mean, black people were always in the punk scene. When X-ray Spex got popular on tiktok i went crazy cuz they were a very early punk band, fronted by a black woman. and there are proto punk bands like Death and Bad Brains that literally defined the genre. and one of the most prominent black riot grrrl of the modern era is Big Joanie.
yk i could be totally wrong about all of this i wasnt alive lmfaooo. side note: punk subculture is most defined by music, politics, and fashion. while im not so much aligned with the fashion, im heavily aligned with the politics. so yea punch nazis and stuff.
i also like goth, grunge, prog rock, emo, all the rocks really. i just know extensively about riot grrrl. plus, i still listen to indie rock, r&b, jpop, jrock, kpop, and recently visual kei! i love vocaloid, idol music, music from anime, and breakcore. ima totally make a list of my favorite anime ops and eds
