Monster Tale is a Nintendo DS game from 2011. Its a metroidvania mixed with a virtual pet game developed by DreamRift. Released only in North America, the game was relatively obscure. (Well I'm just assuming it was obscure and underrated, ive never seen anyone talk abt it). Its about the story of a young girl, Ellie, and the cute lil monster named Chomp that she found in the strange world she was transported to.
The world that Ellie woke up in is called Monster World, and it is currently in peril because of its control by the kid-kings. the kid kings are literally kids, about Ellie's age, that somehow came into control of monsters. Their personal monsters serve as the bosses in each area of the game and Ellie has to defeat them!
When i played this i was a dumb child. i got stuck and gave up so i never knew how the plot ended. But a few years ago i picked up my 3ds again and this game was in the cartridge holder. So I played it and I was totally hooked. and then i got stuck again and gave up.
characters
the first thing i love about this game is the character designs. Chomp, our monster, is the CUTEST in his baby stage, but then he grows up into different forms. The player has the choice of which forms he evolves into (he can change at any time), and there are lots of other attributes to control to get the most powerul Chomp that you need. My favorite form was the Seeker
the kid kings are also rlly fucking slay, like, just look
i remember zoe's fight the most. zoe is a really young girl whos area was like a toy factory. her monster was a stuffed animal bunny. I remember it because it was so hard for me to beat her as a child. that rolling mf...
i also loved how unhinged all of the characters were. they were MEAN to Ellie and roasted the shit out of her all the time. they read her tf down every tiimeee.
music
THIS SHIT SLAPSSSS
i mean, the soundtrack is really good. its constantly in my head tbh. the title track alone fills me with both hope for the future and misty nostalgia. my favorites are:
this game has a special place in my heart because it reminds me of my childhood. It reminds me of a time when I was new... I didn't know about which games were popular and it didnt matter how "good" i was at playing games. Back when life was just me and my pink 3ds.
